Candidates 2021 redux

The Candidates is the second phase of the Malta Championship and following its postponement in July 2021, will now be held from 25 October to 8 November 2021 with seven games being played on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 18:00 at the Chess Club at St Ignatius College Ħandaq Middle School, Tal-Ħandaq, l/o Qormi (35°52’13.3″N 14°28’17.6″E).  The tournament format and dates may be amended depending on the number of entries in view of medical requirements for venue sizes.  The Malta Chess Federation shall be referring to the medical security policy and protocol for FIDE events as updated and the Government’s mandatory standards for sports for its official events.

 

Players eligible for taking part must fulfil the following requirements (as per MCF Statute):

  • Maltese citizen (as defined in Cap. 188 of Maltese law) or ordinarily resident in Malta for a period of at least six years in the preceding 8 years; AND
  • Paid Member of the Malta Chess Federation; AND
  • Qualified through the Preliminaries 2021 (Top 6) or rating of at least 1800 in any of these three FIDE rating lists – 1 May 2021, 1 July 2021 or 1 October 2021.
All registrations are by email to info@chessmalta.comQualifiers and reserves from the Preliminaries should confirm their willingness to participate or otherwise by latest Friday 15 October 2020, while players rated 1800+ are to apply by latest Friday 22 October 2021.
