Conrad Thake and Oana Caruana Pulpan Triumph in 2025 Seniors and Women’s Chess Championships

 

Conrad Thake wins the Seniors Championship

The 15th Malta Champion has won his 3rd Seniors Championship with 5 wins and a draw, once again ending on an unbeaten run.

His rival and the runner-up, Mario Psaila also ended on an unbeaten run, winning 3 games and obtaining 3 draws. The experienced veteran won the 65+ category.

John Richards got third place, with 4 wins and a draw, only losing to the two tournament leaders, Thake and Psaila.

Oana Caruana Pulpan clinches the Women’s Championship

After her strong performance in Sicily, Oana returned back to the local chess scene in top form, winning the Women’s Championship title. Oana achieved an unbeaten run, with only a draw against the Women Junior Champion Yunlong Wang

Former co-champion Milena Stagno also had a good run, only losing two games in the tournament, against Oana and Filipina Thornton. Stagno remains on good form, as she pushes toward the 1800 rating milestone.

Jamie Farrugia secured third place with 4 wins and a draw. A strong contender throughout the tournament, she narrowly missed out on retaining her title in the final round, losing to Oana.

This year’s Women’s Championship featured competitive play and strong performances, reflecting the continued development of women’s chess in Malta.
