The Malta Chess Federation (MCF), led by President Duncan Vella, has entered into a historic agreement with Luigi Maggi, President of the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana. This landmark collaboration allows Maltese chess players, who are members of the MCF, to participate in exclusive Italian tournaments, fostering greater international competition and camaraderie.
Mr. Maggi commented, “I am confident that this agreement will strengthen the friendship between our countries and federations.” The agreement not only enables players to take part in Italian Championships but also allows junior players to participate in Italian training programs.
Mr. Vella shared that the idea for this agreement originated during a meeting at the FIDE Congress in Budapest last September. “I mentioned to Mr. Maggi that many Maltese players participate in the CIS (Italian team league) tournament by joining Sicilian teams. I then proposed the idea of accepting Maltese players without the need to join Sicilian clubs.” This led to the drafting of a contract in December, culminating in the signing of the agreement.
Vella added, “I am confident that Maltese chess players will seize this opportunity to compete against stronger opponents close to home.” Preparations are already underway for Maltese teams to participate in the Italian CIS league, scheduled for mid-March.
