Jamie and Milena are the winner of Women Championship 2023

The recent push by the Malta Chess Federation to attract female players to the game bore fruit as 9 players took part in the women’s championship. The tournament was held as a single round robin of 9 rounds. 2022 champion Jamie Farrugia led the field and was defending her title.

Her main contender was female junior champion Milena Stagno. Both are experienced national team players. The rest of the field consisted of Junior players Valentina Borg, Yunlong Wang, Julia Buttigieg, Elena Borg Mercieca and Chloe Azzopardi Frantz – some of whom recently took part in junior competition abroad. Martina Portelli and Ella Micel-Farrugia made up the rest of the field.

Interesting games were played throughout and while Farrugia and Stagno were favourites, Portelli and Miceli-Farrugia played very good games and gave them a rather tough time. When one considers that this is their first experience in this championship, it augurs well for the future. The junior players definitely earned a lot of experience in their chess journey and they will benefit from it.

Farrugia and Stagno drew their game and beat all the rest of the players. They thus share this Championship and are declared joint Champions. This is Farrugia’s second win in a row and a first title for Stagno.
