Matthew Portelli records outstanding top-four finish at European Youth Blitz Championship as Maltese youngsters impress in Poland
Maltese junior chess players Matthew Portelli and Nikol Borg recently represented Malta at the 25th European Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships held in Rzeszów, Poland, producing a number of encouraging performances against some of Europe’s strongest young players.
The championships attracted hundreds of participants from across the continent and provided an excellent opportunity for Malta’s young talents to test themselves against high-level international opposition.
Portelli shines in Under 16 Blitz Championship
Competing in the Under 16 Blitz Championship, Matthew Portelli delivered one of the strongest international performances by a Maltese junior player in recent years, finishing in a remarkable joint fourth place out of 121 participants.
Entering the event ranked 21st based on his FIDE Blitz rating, Portelli enjoyed an exceptional tournament, recording victories against opponents from Poland, Ukraine and Austria while consistently producing strong results against higher-rated opposition.
His outstanding performance is expected to earn him an impressive gain of approximately 197 FIDE Blitz rating points, bringing him close to the 2300 rating mark.
Portelli also competed in the Under 16 Rapid Championship, where he scored 4.5 points and finished in joint 51st place out of 120 players in another highly competitive field.
Valuable international experience for Borg
Malta was also represented in the Under 10 categories by eight-year-old Nikol Borg, one of the country’s most promising young players and already a familiar name on the local junior chess scene following a number of impressive performances and achievements in Malta.
Competing in the Under 10 Blitz Championship, Borg scored an excellent 9 points, finishing in joint 54th place out of 112 participants while gaining an impressive 62 FIDE rating points.
He also took part in the Under 10 Rapid Championship, scoring 2.5 points and gaining valuable experience against some of Europe’s strongest young players.
Representing Malta abroad
International tournaments such as the European Youth Championships provide invaluable opportunities for Maltese players to gain experience, improve their level of play, and represent Malta on the international stage.
The Malta Chess Federation congratulates both Matthew and Nikol for their performances in Poland and for proudly representing Maltese chess abroad. The Federation wishes them continued success in their future competitions and looks forward to following their progress in the years ahead.
