Malta was represented by Matthew Portelli and Jack Mizzi at the European Individual Chess Championship 2026, held in Katowice between 6–20 April. The tournament, one of Europe’s leading individual events and part of the FIDE World Championship cycle, featured 501 players competing over 11 rounds in Swiss format.

Both Maltese players delivered strong performances across the البطولة. Mizzi produced one of the highlights of the event with an impressive win over International Master Tobias Kuegel, showcasing excellent endgame technique. He maintained solid form throughout, adding further victories—including a notable attacking win against Rishi Vijayakumar—and competing consistently against high-level opposition.

Portelli, competing in his first major adult international tournament at just 14 years old, showed maturity and promise. He secured important wins, including a confident attacking game against Roman Tyshniuk, and demonstrated resilience with steady performances across the rounds.

A particularly strong phase came in rounds seven and eight, where both players won their games, registering four victories for Malta across two rounds and highlighting their ability to compete at this level.

In the final standings, Mizzi scored 5.5 points against a very strong field—facing multiple International Masters—and achieved a performance rating of 2273, with an expected rating gain that will take him back above the 2200 mark. Portelli finished with 5 points and a performance rating of 2024, gaining valuable experience that will contribute significantly to his development.

Out of 501 participants, Mizzi placed joint 223rd, while Portelli finished joint 283rd—both outperforming expectations relative to their seedings.

Overall, the championship marked an important step forward for both players. Competing against some of Europe’s strongest opposition provided invaluable experience as they continue to develop and prepare for future international competitions.

The Malta Chess Federation thanks SportMalta and the Malta Olympic Committee for their continued support.
