The Primary Interschools Chess Tournament 2026, organised by the Malta Chess Federation in collaboration with Chess Buddies & Mates Malta, took place on 24 April at Stella Maris College, Gżira.

This year’s edition marked a significant milestone for school chess in Malta, with a record turnout of over 110 students participating in the competition. The strong level of participation reflects the continued growth of chess at primary level and the increasing engagement of schools across the island.

Archbishop’s Seminary Junior School were crowned champions for the second consecutive year, delivering an outstanding performance by winning all five rounds and finishing with 13 game points. The team was represented by George Borg Mercieca, Brenton Schembri, and Julian Gatt Jostner.

St. Edward’s College secured second place after winning four matches and finishing with 12 game points. The team consisted of Leo Nagle, Doyoon Park, Saks Tirril, and Luca Cremona (reserve).

St. Paul’s Missionary College placed third, also winning four matches and finishing with 10.5 game points. The team was represented by Gianluigi Zammit, Mattia Zahra, and Gabriele Zammit.

St. Thomas More College Tarxien also finished level on points for third place and are to be commended for their strong performance throughout the tournament.

The Malta Chess Federation extends its thanks to all organisers and arbiters, as well as to Chess Buddies & Mates Malta for their collaboration, and the staff at Stella Maris College for hosting the event and providing an excellent venue.

The Federation also congratulates all participating students for their effort, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm, which continue to play an important role in the development of chess among young players in Malta.
