88th Malta Chess Championship
The 2023 Candidates, the second phase of the 88th Malta Chess Championship cycle, will be held from the 1st to the 15th of July 2023. The tournament regulations are available here. Registration is by email to firstname.lastname@example.org by 28 June 2023. The entry fee is €10.
Entry is subject to satisfying the relevant eligibility requirements: MCF member; and FIDE licensed under MLT flag; and either Maltese citizen, or resident for 6+ years in the preceding 8 years; and either (1) ranked Top 8 at Preliminaries 2023, or (2) rated 1700+ in 1 Feb or 1 Jun 2023 FIDE standard rating lists (or 1 Jan 2014 final national rating lists if unrated), or (3) placed as winner or runner-up at the 2022 Finals tournament in the 87th Malta Chess Championship.
The tournament will consist of 7 Swiss rounds played on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays (1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 12 & 15 July 2023) at 18:00 local time at the Malta Chess Federation’s premises in Ħandaq Middle School, St Ignatius Complex, Tal-Ħandaq l/o Ħal Qormi, Malta. The time control is 40 moves in 90 minutes, rest in 15 minutes, with a 30 second increment per move from move 1 per player. The top 4 ranked participants (top 6 if 20+ players) will qualify to Finals Tournament in October.
